Mexican independence from Spain in 1821 has been one of the most celebrated historical events in the American country. It has appeared in sculptures, paintings, poetry… and also on the country’s legal tender coins! This is the case of the 50-peso Centenario coin, which depicts the statue commemorating the achievement of sovereignty in Mexico. Its name comes from the fact that they were minted just a century after the country achieved its longed-for independence.
This can be seen especially on the face, where we find a Winged Victory, which in Mexico is represented by the monument of the Angel of Independence, on a small rock: in her right hand she holds a laurel wreath representing victory, while in her left hand she holds broken chains. Behind it, we see two of the country’s most famous volcanoes, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
Both the heads and the tails have special motifs on the edge of the coin: they look like square structures that resemble the battlements of a medieval castle. The edge of the coin is flat, and is engraved with the word ‘Independence’.
On the cross of the coin we see the design of the Mexican coat of arms, an eagle on a nopal (cactus) plant, shown attacking a snake, another metaphor for the country’s independence. The level of detail of the eagle’s wings is spectacular, and one of the most remarkable elements of the coin. Above it, the name of the country where the coin was issued: the United States of Mexico.
The Mexican Peso Anniversary coin is well known for its size and beauty, as well as its undisputed historical value. In addition to this, it weighs 20% more than traditional ounce coins, as it contains 37.50 grams of pure gold out of a total of 41.66 grams, the proportion being 90% gold and 10% copper to ensure its solidity and durability. Minted with 999 purity by the Bank of Mexico, it has a diameter of 37.00 millimetres and a thickness of 2.70 millimetres.
